The most important thing I ever learned in online business came from my mentor and Copy Cure partner, Marie Forleo. She told me, “It’s all about the email list. The gold is in the list.” (It took at least seven years for that to fully click.) When I was making my first website, she asked, “What’s your opt-in?”
My what-in?
She explained how, to build a subscriber list, you offer a free thing. Something other than just “sign up for my newsletter” or “sign up for weekly tips ‘n’ tricks” because, in exchange for their email address, people want something immediate. “Weekly inspiration in your inbox” rarely does the trick anymore, unless you’re famous…for your inspiration. It’s gotta be something good.
